Designing functional yet hygienic food and beverage (F&B) machinery can be challenging. For instance, to track liquid levels accurately in industrial beverage fillers, the sensors need to sit inside the stainless-steel tank, but stringent food safety regulations ban any components that can trap bacteria or contaminate the product. Conventional mounting methods were insufficient, and every modification either compromised food safety or sensor accuracy. To resolve this concern, flush-mounted, laser-welded “sensor pockets” were introduced where hygienic fitting adaptors are integrated directly into the tank wall, allowing IP69K-rated sensors to be installed without creating bacteria traps.
While this was a common problem in modern F&B machine design, it highlights how equipment in controlled environments differs from standard industrial applications. Requirements such as clean-in-place (CIP) processes demand approved food-grade components and parts that can withstand high pressure and water jet cleaning, placing additional considerations on machine design.
